TIPS FOR EVERYONE. SINCE WE’RE ALL HUMAN.

If there’s one thing I’m learning it’s that you can’t hide from being human. You can’t hide from being scared, from overthinking, from not being perfect. 

We want to do it all and we’re notorious for pushing the load we can handle. Why? Because every time we’re given that heavy load somehow we figure out how to carry it. That’s the beauty of being human.

But it’s not without consequence.

So, if you know much about me from reading my past blogs or follow me on social media, you know I’m interested and involved in many things. My brain just loves ideas and goals and experiences, as I’m sure yours does. 

I also have no problem seeking guidance or help when I need help. I believe in outsourcing what I can’t do or don’t have time to do. It relieves a heck of a lot of stress off my plate and it improves my bandwidth to get more accomplished and reach my goals faster.

This article isn’t about outsourcing, but it is about finding peace and calm in the midst of a jam-packed, stress-filled life —even if that means asking for help. 

Even good stressors have a physiological impact on our bodies. And stress over time affects your sleep, your mood, your weight, and your relationships.

Taking care of yourself

Knowing yourself and taking care of yourself is probably one of the most underrated acts we as humans do. We take care of others, try to improve their lives, serve their needs, try to be who they need and want us to be, but we can easily lose sight of who we should be —our truth, what makes us tick.

When you take time to know yourself and sort out what things in your life serve you and don’t serve you, you end up peeling back layers of stress you never knew were there. 

This is just one way that I decided to start focusing on myself but about a year and a half ago, I hired a fitness trainer. My workouts were inconsistent and I didn’t like how my clothes were fitting. I had to get real with myself because I wasn’t seeing progress from my own workouts so I decided I needed an accountability partner. I’ve had my trainer ever since and I feel so proud of how far I’ve come. 

Recognize your triggers

If you keep putting yourself in the same stressful situation, the outcome will remain the same. Let me give you an example from my life. Homework and bedtime with the kids are the worst for me. I’m learning that my patience levels are non-existent during those times. Let’s just say it’s not my prettiest moment. 

My most recent response to this has been to remove myself from the situation because I don’t like how I feel or how I act to the people around me. Clearly, that’s only a temporary solution so now I’m working to sort through my emotions to help make homework and bedtime more tolerable for everyone. The first part for me was recognizing the trigger, and now I’m looking to work through it. 

When we have bad feelings pop up, it doesn’t help us to ignore them or push them away. We can become aware of them, acknowledge them, and process through to achieve a positive outcome. 

Seek professional help

Even when it seems like everything is perfect, things can feel wrong. Our head doesn’t let go of looping thoughts, the stress affects our sleep, or we feel lost and without clarity. 

One of the best ways to solve these issues is to seek professional help from a therapist. When we have diabetes we see a doctor so why is it so off-putting to see a therapist? 

Well for starters, I think we all feel like we should be able to ‘fix’ ourselves. But we are complex beings and our minds get cluttered like a messy bedroom where we can’t see the floor. 

Therapists help you clear the clutter. They help you acknowledge and process what’s happening, understanding how it got there. I recently started seeing a therapist. A sounding board is exactly what I needed to help isolate those instances in life that are causing greater stress.

Know when to call it

It’s ok to stop doing something you don’t love. If it’s your job, your relationship, your lifestyle, you don’t have to stick it out just because that’s what you’ve been taught. 

Our time is short here. We need to be doing the things that make us feel whole. That doesn’t mean walking in and quitting today but it means that you can make those feelings temporary by planning your next move forward. Know when to call it quits.

Show yourself to the world

Be ok with not being perfect. Be ok with not being the person you think everyone wants you to be. You’d be amazed at how that one decision lifts a heavy weight off your shoulders —one that you ever knew you were carrying. 

Show up unapologetically. Be real, raw, compassionate, and kind. Always kind, to yourself and others. When you stop judging yourself, so does the world.
